India–Japan Relations in 2025: A New Golden Chapter

1. A Visionary Summit in Tokyo

  • On August 29–30, 2025, Prime Minister Narendra Modi attended the 15th India–Japan Annual Summit in Tokyo with Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba. They signed 12 key agreements, unveiling a Joint Vision for the Next Decade, focused on trade, economic resilience, defence, technology, and people-to-people ties .
  • Japan pledged ¥10 trillion (~$68 billion) in private-sector investment to India over the next decade .

2. Strategic Security Partnership

  • A Joint Declaration on Security Cooperation was adopted addressing both traditional and non-traditional threats—terrorism, cybersecurity, AI, robotics, quantum tech, and space, alongside enhanced defense dialogues and institutional mechanisms for coordination .
  • Both leaders reaffirmed commitment to a free, rules-based Indo-Pacific, supporting ASEAN centrality, upholding maritime freedom, and enhancing Quad cooperation .

3. Technology, Innovation & Space Collaboration

  • India and Japan agreed to deepen technological cooperation, especially in semiconductors, AI, high-speed rail, space, and digital infrastructure .
  • A highlight of the summit: Modi visited a semiconductor plant in Sendai, reinforcing Indo-Japan collaboration in critical tech sectors .
  • Space collaboration took a major leap with the Chandrayaan-5 (LUPEX) mission agreed upon between ISRO and JAXA, and broader partnerships under the Digital Partnership 2.0 and science exchange initiatives .

4. Infrastructure & High-Speed Rail Ambitions

  • The Mumbai–Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail Corridor, India’s flagship project, continues in partnership with Japan. Japan will gift two retired Shinkansen train sets (E5 and E3) to aid testing; meanwhile, the advanced E10 series trains, slated for introduction in India by 2030, highlight ongoing technological cooperation .

5. Trade, Investment & Economic Resilience

  • Bilateral trade stood at $22.8 billion in 2023–24 (with ~$21 billion from April–January 2024–25), showing strong stability .
  • Japan is India’s 5th-largest FDI source, with cumulative investments of around $43.2 billion till end-2024; about 1,400 Japanese companies operate in India. Emerging areas include semiconductors, AI, startups, clean energy, and supply chain resilience .
  • Japan also continues as India’s largest bilateral ODA donor, with JPY 580 billion (~$4.5 billion) disbursed in 2023–24 .

6. People-to-People Exchanges & Cultural Bonds

  • 2023–24 was declared the Year of Tourism Exchange with the theme “Connecting Himalayas with Mount Fuji”, promoting enhanced cultural ties .
  • Education collaboration remains strong via academic partnerships, the LOTUS Programme, Sakura Science Exchange, Edu-Connect, Skill Connect, and scholarships .
  • The Indian diaspora in Japan is around 54,000, mainly professionals in IT and engineering .
